3. Not signing a tight end to replace Darren Waller

There were a ton of questions surrounding Darren Waller’s future with the Giants entering free agency. However, Schoen and the team’s front office opted to focus more on depth, rather than signing a starting-caliber tight end, with Waller’s future hanging in the balance.

As fate would have it, Waller decided to retire following free agency and the NFL Draft, leaving the team in a lurch as it pertains to their tight end depth chart. Yes, they have some interesting players at the position, such as Theo Johnson and Daniel Bellinger, but it’s no guarantee they’ll be able to turn into reliable targets for Daniel Jones in 2024.

Additionally, the team’s free agent signings, Chris Manhertz and Jack Stoll, aren’t exactly Waller-like receivers. If Waller let the Giants know of their plans earlier, or if Schoen was a little more cutthroat, perhaps the team could’ve signed a premium tight end in free agency, instead of waiting on his eventual decision.
