4 problems the Giants need to fix before facing the Commanders in Week 2
By Doug Rush
Better play from Daniel Jones
In his return to the Giants lineup as the starting quarterback for the first time since tearing his ACL back in November, Daniel Jones was terrible. Jones barely looked like an NFL caliber quarterback -he was indecisive and looked like a deer in headlights.
Jones was picked off twice, one of which was for a pick-six, as he went 22-for-42 for just 186 yards with no touchdowns and the two interceptions. Jones was also sacked five times and four of which were credited as being his fault.
For once, we can’t blame the Giants offensive line for Jones struggling, as they were at fault for only one of the sacks. We also can’t fault the wide receivers, as they were getting open and had 4.4 yards of separation. Jones was simply making terrible decisions with the football. The Giants fanbase is turning on him more than ever now, and most don’t even think he should be playing going forward.
Of course, Jones is going up against an opponent in the Commanders that he’s had success against dating back to his rookie year, as he is 5-1-1 against them. Some see this game as one for Jones to potentially get straightened out and maybe get some confidence back in himself. Baker Mayfield was able to throw for almost 300 yards and four touchdowns on the Washington defense in Week 1, so putting the ball in the air and getting yards is definitely doable against the Commanders.
For Jones, some think Week 2 could be his last chance, especially if Brian Daboll wants to consider making a change early on. If Jones wants to hang onto his job for a little while longer and get the critics off his back for at least a week, then he has to look and act the part of a quarterback who's on hook for $47.1 million on the salary cap. The Giants could use another winning performance from Jones against the Commanders like they’ve seen him give them in the past. His job and career with the team could be relying on it.
