5 free agents the NY Giants and Joe Schoen should avoid this summer
It’s almost time for the return of the NFL. Camp and the preseason will get here before you know it. The exciting part of NFL free agency is over, but there’s still plenty of big name players remaining on the board. As things stand, the NY Giants still have some holes, so expect them to look at some of the various free agents available. Joe Schoen has some money to operate with as well because of the Darren Waller retirement.
The Giants would be smart to add some veteran help at various positions. Some remaining players such as Kareem Hunt, Stephon Gilmore and Emmanuel Ogbah have been mentioned, but the Giants have yet to add them. Reunions with Justin Pugh and Adoree' Jackson could also make some sense as well, but it's unlikely. The guys mentioned in this piece should be avoided, though:
Cam Akers and Dalvin Cook
The Giants lost Saquon Barkley in free agency. They signed Devin Singletary to replace him and drafted Tyrone Tracy Jr. New York will possibly add another veteran running back in free agency, but they should avoid Cam Akers and Dalvin Cook.
Cook is not far removed from being an elite running back with the Vikings, but after a down year in 2022, things collapsed for Cook in 2023 after a failed stint with the Jets and Ravens. Cam Akers is a younger player, but has dealt with various issues.
Akers suffered a torn Achilles last season. He was also traded from the Rams to the Vikings after some off-field issues. Both players have not had a lot of interest in the market and it is easy to see why. Schoen and Co. should stay away here.
