5 main NY Giants talking points ahead of mandatory minicamp
2. Theo Johnson must deliver with Darren Waller gone
Giants fans were hit with some big news recently, as Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller announced his retirement after just one season with the team. This is a decision we all expected, but given the mental health aspects of Waller's choice, it's likely best for him and his family that he takes a step back from football.
Regardless, with Waller gone, there is now a hole in the Giants' TEs room. While they have some solid guys like Daniel Bellinger and rookie Theo Johnson, it's unknown if either of them can produce like Waller did when healthy.
As of now, it seems like Johnson is the best bet to step up in Waller's absence. Bellinger is a very consistent pass-catcher who doubles as a great blocker, but Johnson's ceiling as a receiver thanks to his athleticism and dynamic traits make him the better option for now.
During his last season at Penn State, Johnson caught 32 passes for 325 yards and six touchdowns. These numbers may not seem impressive, but his athletic abilities were very evident on film, making him an easy choice for the Giants in the fourth round. Hopefully, he produces like we think he can.
