5 NY Giants whose stock plummeted leading up to Week 1
By Doug Rush
We are almost to the start of the 2024 regular season and the 100th campaign for the NY Giants. While some are looking at it with excitement towards the start of a new year and a fresh start, a lot of others are still remembering what they saw a year ago.
A Giants team finished 6-11 after getting off to a 2-8 start to the season. On top of that, they saw a sixth losing season in seven years with the lone playoff year in 2022 being a very long-distant memory that almost was forgotten. The typical Giants fan doesn’t have much optimism. Losing can do that to a person.
During the preseason, the Giants had a chance to give the fans something to look forward to. Maybe a reason to have hope. However, after their victory against the Detroit Lions, back-to-back losses against the Houston Texans and New York Jets didn’t give folks much confidence about the 2024 regular season. If anything, it compounded their assurance of another potential lousy season in East Rutherford. There were some players who solidified themselves and made headeaves. Elijah Chatman was the one who made the most of them during the summer and went from an unknown undrafted free agent to being on the final 53-man roster. But then there were others who saw a once guaranteed roster spot diminish and playing time that was no longer guaranteed.
Which players saw their stock as members of the Giants sink as we approach Week 1 of the regular season?
NY Giants WR Isaiah Hodgins
If there was ever a player whose downfall with a team needs to be studied, it is Isaiah Hodgins with the Giants - because it’s been a tragic one to watch.
Two years ago when the Giants were a playoff team, Hodgins was a major part of that. He was probably Daniel Jones’ most trusted weapon throwing the ball to during the second half of the season and into the playoff victory against the Minnesota Vikings. Hodgins seemed like he was an emerging player and effective weapon in the Brian Daboll offense.
After hardly being a factor in 2023, Hodgins saw his name go tumbling down the depth chart. With Malik Nabers being drafted to go along with Wan’Dale Robinson, Jalin Hyatt and Darius Slayton, Hodgins was fighting to be the fifth wide receiver along with veteran Allen Robinson. By the end of training camp, it was both Robinson and Hodgins who got cut, although Hodgins was able to get onto the Giants practice squad as insurance and in case any of the wide receivers are hurt during the year.
Hodgins went from being the Giants primary target at wide receiver during a playoff run to just making the practice squad in a matter of two short seasons. Whether Hodgins has a future or not with the Giants past the 2024 season remains to be seen.
