Analyst claims the Giants will 'forfeit the season' if they don't bench Daniel Jones
The national media is starting to run with their rough takes on NY Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. This has been a bit expected following the team's 28-10 loss to the Texans in preseason Week 2. It was a game that fans were fired up about before kickoff.
However, things quickly went south and countless critiques have come in on Danny Dimes. This was the former No. 6 overall pick's chance to remind people of why the Giants gave him $160 million, but if anything, a reminder was showcased to why the team likely has buyer's remorse.
Fox Sports 1's Emmanuel Acho is the latest insider to obliterate Jones following his two-interception showing. If you ask Acho, not only should the veteran QB be benched immediately, but Brian Daboll should keep him off the field to prevent the team from forfeiting the campaign. Goodness:
Emmanuel Acho is calling for the NY Giants to bench Daniel Jones right now
"If the Giants do not bench Daniel Jones, they are admitting that they are forfeiting the season and that's the dilemma at hand. When you walk into an NFL locker room and Daniel Jones is your starting quarterback, you are admitting not just to the 53 players plus the 10 practice squad players, but you are admitting to your fans, 'we are submitting during the course of the season. We are already saying mercy.'"
- Emmanuel Acho
Tell us how you really feel, Mr. Acho. This is a bit over the top from the former Eagles outside linebacker. Yes, Jones looked rough vs. Houston in the first quarter, with his pick-six being deserving of the No. 1 spot on SportsCenter's Not Top 10 list.
However, few people can argue that Jones is the best QB in East Rutherford for the Giants to operate with. Drew Lock is a No. 2 guy for a reason and even he looked terrible against the Lions in the preseason opener. Tommy DeVito is a great story, but are you going to put the ball in his hands over Jones to take on the Vikings on Sept. 8? No chance.
After the torn ACL he suffered against the Raiders, the game action against Houston was Jones' first in a long, long time. He made some poor decisions, but he also delivered some quality balls. Brian Daboll isn't going to pull the plug just yet. Should Jones struggle early on this fall, then yes, absolutely he should be benched. However, Acho calling for him to grab a clipboard now is a bit of an overreaction.
