Brian Daboll leaving door open for Giants QB change makes zero sense
What a story Tommy DeVito has been for the NY Giants this season. In his last three games, his first career starts in the NFL, the New Jersey native has tossed for six touchdowns and helped Big Blue post a 2-1 record. Surely that's enough for him to keep playing the rest of the way, right?
Not so fast. Tyrod Taylor has been out a little while after suffering a rib injury against the Jets. However, after the BYE week, Taylor could return to take on the Packers for a Monday Night Football tilt. After the win over New England, Brian Daboll most definitely left the door open for DeVito to hit the bench and Taylor to be the starter again:
Brian Daboll could replace Tommy DeVito for Tyrod Taylor in Week 14
On one hand, yes, Taylor has more experience and you can argue he gives the Giants the best chance to win. However, you've got to stick with the hot hand. Also, while DeVito has been far from perfect since taking over the offense, this all feels like an audition for him to be QB2 next season.
Taylor is set to become a free agent and the expectation is that he'll be joining a new team in 2024. However, if DeVito continues to play smart football and help the G-Men post wins, then he could lock the backup job for next campaign.
In a lost season, why let Taylor take over as the starter late in the fall when DeVito can keep gaining valuable experience and grow as a young QB. DeVito had a career day vs. Washington last Sunday and he followed things up with solid numbers vs. the Pats.
Against New England, DeVito tossed for 191 yards and one touchdown, with Isaiah Hodgins hauling in his second score of the year. DeVito didn't turn the ball over too, which was great to see. From our chair, Tommy D should be the one to take on Jordan Love and the Packers in two weeks. If Daboll and Mike Kafka roll with Taylor, a lot of fans will be quite disappointed with that call.
