It's a clip that you've probably seen a few times by now. During the loss on Friday night to the Detroit Lions, the NY Giants allowed a 95-yard punt return for a touchdown. Fans were furious and head man Brian Daboll was too.
So much in fact, the cameras caught Daboll giving special teams coach Thomas McGaughey a death stare. With so many mistakes being made by McGaughey's unit, plenty of NY supporters were worried that perhaps his seat was getting a bit hot. Not a chance.
Daboll was asked about the viral clip and he didn't hesitate in saying that he's got nothing but love for McGaughey. This was just a moment of frustration from Coach Dabes and nothing more:
Brian Daboll voiced his support for special teams coach Thomas McGaughey
"Non-issue. I’m a competitive guy, we’re all competitive, we’re in a competitive environment. I hold everybody, not just T-Mac, myself, and everybody else, to a high standard."Brian Daboll
Daboll is always going to want the best from not only his players, but his coaches as well. The special teams performance was rough at Ford Field and the exact same thing could be said for Bobby Johnson's offensive line.
Both those units needs to showcase major improvements in the second preseason game of the summer, with the Carolina Panthers making their way to MetLife Stadium this week. It goes without saying, but McGaughey is going to do everything in his power to make sure his guys operate with more intensity.
Special teams can make or break things for a team on Sundays and now is the time for things to get cleaned up. Daboll will put up with some errors during the preseason, but silly mental mistakes aren't going to be tolerated. Judging from what Daboll had to say, though, he doesn't seem concerned that McGaughey will be able to get things fixed.
