Insider has Giants making first-round pick that would infuriate Saquon Barkley
We are only hours away from the 2023 NFL Draft arriving and the suspense is killing us. Who will NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen take No. 25 overall? We're about to find out on Thursday night, as countless players have been mentioned as options.
There's now a new prospect for Big Blue supporters to keep an eye on, and he's a bit if a surprising one. In his final NFL Mock Draft, NFL insider Peter Schrager thinks that the Giants will focus on offense in the first round. However, he's going with Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs. What in the world?
Peter Schrager thinks the Giants could take a RB in the first round
"This selection would be prime tabloid fodder in New York, but with Saquon Barkley's future in limbo, Joe Schoen gets another back in Gibbs, who can contribute on special teams and play out wide, as well. "
- Peter Schrager
This is the first time we've seen Gibbs linked with the G-Men and we're not sure how to feel about things. Schrager makes a valid point, as Barkley is not happy with the contract situation, which led to him not signing his franchise tender and missing out on the start of the offseason program.
With Barkley (hopefully) playing on the tag in 2023, no one knows what will happen once 2024 rolls around. There's a chance we could see him leave East Rutherford. If that were to happen, then maybe someone like Gibbs could step in as the starter for head man Brian Daboll and offense coordinator Mike Kafka.
The hope is that Barkley will be able to finalize a multi-year deal with the team and be all smiles before Week 1 arrives. With Barkley not happy with the front office, though, the Giants drafting a star RB is only going to make him even angrier.
This would create countless headlines in the Big Apple if Schoen does decide to pick Gibbs in the first round. Stay tuned.
