Giants and Joe Schoen sign LB Benton Whitley off Vikings practice squad
There's a new outside linebacker in town for the New York Giants. That'd be edge-rusher Benton Whitley, who was signed to the active roster off of the Vikings practice squad. Depth on the outside has been a problem for the Giants and Schoen, as Azeez Ojulari hasn't been able to keep himself healthy over the past two seasons.
This is Whitley's second year in the league. He went undrafted during the 2022 NFL Draft out of Holy Cross, but signed with the Rams shortly after as an UDFA. He spent the start of the '22 campaign on the practice squad, but then was signed off the PS by the Kansas City Chiefs to their active roster. He then made his way to the KC practice squad before the Vikings ended up signing him in October.
Whitley made his pro debut during Week 1 this season, seeing the majority of his playing time on special teams. He was on the Minnesota practice squad again, but now Schoen and Co. are looking to give him a shot. Whitley doesn't have a ton of experience, but at 6-4, 260 pounds, he has great size and speed to potentially make an impact.
