Giants reportedly close to reuniting with one of best available cornerbacks

It wouldn't be Labor Day Weekend without at least one notable move.

It's almost that time again. Every year, like clockwork, some NFL team makes a move on the Friday afternoon before Labor Day Weekend, ruining a handful of bloggers plans and forcing them to be 90 minutes late to the hang. It's as time-honored a tradition as any in the NFL – one that should be cherished as such. Roster moves wait for no one.

And, if Giants fans are lucky, it sounds like this year might be their year. If you're one for believing anonymously-sourced reports, the team is close to reuniting with one of their better cornerbacks from over the last three seasons. According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the team's close to a deal with Adoree Jackson.

Giants reuniting with Adoree Jackson makes a ton of sense

Putting aside how odd it is that Jackson is still available on Labor Day Weekend, the two sides coming together on a short term deal always made a ton of sense. Jackson wasn't very good for them last year, but played well in both 2021 and 2022.

It's not uncommon to see corners like Jackson have up-and-down careers, and even the most brief peruse of Pro Football Focus shows a guy who's more than capable of being a starting caliber cornerback that maybe just had a rough season in 2023. His overall grade that season (48.6) was admittedly terrible, but his grades in 2022 (72.2) and 2021 (74.9) are far more in line with what his career averages look like. He's not much of a turnover machine – he only has four career interceptions – but he's around the ball plenty, consistently putting up 5-7 PBU's per season.

And obviously that's not a ton, but this is a depth cornerback signing happening quite literally a few days before their season opener; beggars can't be choosers. He was a team captain last year, so at the very least, the Giants are getting a good locker room guy. Cornerback depth is a valuable thing in today's NFL, and getting a vet like Jackson back on what figures to be a cheap, team-friendly deal is a savvy move. And once this move happens, you can go back to your Labor Day plans. It's really a win-win.
