Giants Rumors: First-round QB target took a Top 30 visit to NY out of nowhere
With the NFL Combine wrapped up and the NFL Draft arriving soon, sometimes we can forget that Top 30 visits are about to take center stage. Well, it looks like things are already going down in East Rutherford for the NY Giants, with Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll meeting with top targets.
Such was the case with quarterback Drake Maye. According to The Giants Insider, Maye made his way to town to meet with the Giants brass. Previously, Maye was seen as the No. 2 QB for his draft class behind Caleb Williams, but both J.J. McCarthy and Jayden Daniels may have moved ahead of him.
Drake Maye reportedly had a Top 30 visit with the New York Giants
We can debate where Maye belongs in the QB rankings leading up to late April, but it's clear the Giants like what they've seen out of the North Carolina superstar. Maye has a cannon for an arm and he's a lock to be a Top 10 pick, especially with so many QB-needy teams these days.
Checking in at 6-4, 230 pounds, Maye is coming off a strong year for the Tar Heels in 2023. This past season, the gun-slinger tossed for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns. He did have nine interceptions, but we'll let that slide.
He's oozing with potential, but would he be the kind of Daniel Jones replacement that Giants Nation would want Schoen to bring in? That's up in the air, but it seems like people are quite high on Daniels and what he would be able to get done in a Daboll-type offense.
However, with how much the Heisman Trophy winner's stock has been raised this offseason, it seems like there'd need to be a miracle for him to fall to No. 6. That may not be the case for Maye. If Schoen wants to trade up into the Top 3 for Daniels, then so be it. But if he trusts his gut and stays at No. 6, then Maye might end up being his guy. If that plans falls through too, then Schoen can rock with either Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze. Not a bad Plan B at all.
