Decision day is almost here for the NY Giants and star running back Saquon Barkley. At 4 p.m. ET on Monday, we will have our answer as to whether or not the two sides will come to terms on what could be a head-turning extension.
On Sunday, the Jaguars beat the clock early and inked Evan Engram, a former Giants, to a three-year deal worth $41.25 million, and $24 million guaranteed. Now, everyone is waiting to see if Barkley will put the pen to paper on something. Will this finally go down?
The NY Giants are yet to finalize a long-term extension with Saquon Barkley
Over the past few days, there has been growing optimism that Barkley will sign by Monday's deadline. However, there are also plenty of worried Big Blue supporters who think that No. 26 could end up on the tag, be a camp holdout and sit out Week 1.
According to Giants beat reporter Ryan Dunleavy, the 'best offer' general manager Joe Schoen has put on the table includes less than $20 million in guaranteed money. That's simply not going to get it done for Barkley.
If he plays on the tag this year, he'll take home $10.1 million. If the Giants end up tagging him next offseason too, he'd earn around $12 million - that's $22 million guaranteed for two years. Why would he even think about accepting anything less than that from the New York front office?
Schoen and Barkley need to find a sweet spot and fast. After posting 1,312 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns last campaign, both career-highs, Barkley wants to be paid like one of the top RBs in the game. Soon enough, we'll find out if things will end on a good note for Barkley and his GM.
