Are we inching closer to the finish line for the NY Giants in trying to sign Saquon Barkley to a contract extension? It's tough to say. Last Sunday, Barkley left the door open for sitting out the 2023 season, but then ESPN's Jordan Raanan has reported that an old offer is back on the table.

Everyone who loves Big Blue wants to see things get done as soon as possible, especially with the July 17 deadline inching closer. Per Raanan, the two sides are back negotiating. However, what's holding things up? At the end of the day, per Raanan, it's going to come down to the guaranteed money.

The NY Giants are hoping to get things done with Saquon Barkley soon

This makes sense from Barkley's standpoint. If he were to play this season on the non-exclusive franchise tag, he'd be getting $10.1 million. If the Giants were to place the tag on him again next offseason, then he'd be looking at around $12 million for the '24 campaign.

With that, Barkley essentially is looking at $22 million guaranteed over the next two years. The expectation is that he's lookin for a 3-4 year contract from the G-Men. There have been previous reports of the Giants putting a $14 million offer, including incentives, in front of Barkley, but he turned that down.

However, we don't know what the guaranteed money was for that deal. Now, general manager Joe Schoen and Co. are still working to figure things out with Saquon. From our chair, we think they need to make Barkley happy as soon as possible.

Barkley is coming off the best year of his career. The Giants went 9-7-1 last season and they're hoping to take a step forward in '23. That won't be possible unless Barkley is out on the field. If Schoen wants to see that happen, then he's going to have to fork over the dough.
