With the NY Giants taking safety Tyler Nubin with the No. 47 overall pick, so many fans were hoping that Joe Schoen would be able to bring in a new cornerback with his third-round selection. Well, go ahead and rejoice, folks.
With the No. 70 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the New York Giants have selected... Kentucky cornerback Andru Phillips. Phillps, a 5-11, 190-pounder, will now look to land the starting job on the opposite side of the field from Deonte Banks. For Schoen to land a safety and CB on Day 2 is pretty dang good business too.
The NY Giants drafted Kentucky CB Andru Phillips with the No. 70 overall pick
A quick look on social media shows that Giants fans are a bit split on this pick. On one hand, there indeed was a need at cornerback and Phillips is now likely the CB2 for this team. However, his stats from college don't jump off the page.
In his four-year career with Kentucky, Phillips didn't post a single interception and he had 10 pass deflections. With his smaller size, there's a worry that he could have some issues going up against bigger receivers in 2024 and beyond as well.
However, while some people may have some questions on Phillips, he helped his draft stock quite a bit this offseason, especially during the Senior Bowl. Over in Mobile, Phillips looked impressive during drills, especially when he was lined up for one-on-one work.
Phillips now joins a young secondary, a group that said goodbye to Xavier McKinney during free agency, while a reunion with Adoree' Jackson would be a shocker. Schoen entered Day 2 ready to add talent and depth for the DBs room and he has done just that. Phillips may have some people doubting his game, but he'll look to silence his haters once Week 1 rolls around.
