There's no more time to wait, Joe Schoen. There have been some ups and downs for the NY Giants at training camp thus far, but one of the biggest takeaways from Day 2 was the fact that the Big Blue cornerbacks were getting cooked left and right.
Throughout the offseason, it has been clear that depth and experience at CB would be a concern for the '24 season. The issues haven't been addressed, which is why it's a perfect time for New York to sign Stephon Gilmore. Matter of fact, this needs to get done as soon as possible.
The Giants signing Stephon Gilmore is a move Joe Schoen needs to make
There aren't many starting-caliber cornerbacks still out on the free agent market. Xavien Howard would have been a target for Schoen and Co., but he's dealing with some legal issues right now. He was a stud for Miami, but was a cap casualty.
Patrick Peterson would have been another option, but we don't think the Giants are going to want to go after him after he bashed Daniel Jones. To make things even better there, Darius Slayton put Peterson in his place, reminding him of when Jones put on a show against him and the Vikings.
It's still early on in camp, we know that, but the fact of the matter is that something needs to get done to improve the secondary. The pass-rush for the Giants has the ability to be one of the best in the league, but there's only so much they're going to be able to do for new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen.
We've been pushing for Gilmore to make his way to town and we're surely not the only ones. Cor'Dale Flott is slated to be the CB2, and Deonte Banks, a 2023 first-rounder, is of course your CB1. However, Flott needs someone talented to push him for that job. Gilmore should be the answer there.
