4. In-house drama spilling out into the media

The Giants are an organization that values privacy and professionalism. If they’re in the news, the franchise wants it to be overwhelmingly positive, even if that’s unrealistic, and that was understood by Brian Daboll when he took the job.

As John Mara warned the former NFL Coach of the Year, New York can turn against a coach in an instant, and while Daboll has the confidence of the majority of the fan base, he can’t have another Wink Martindale situation on his hands in 2024.

The Giants were in the news for all the wrong reasons last season, and it had nothing to do with their play on the field for the most part. The tension between Daboll and Martindale dominated headlines at times, even if it was shielded from the roster, and things hit a zenith following the conclusion of the year.

For all his faults, Martindale was beloved by Giants fans before his exit, and the jury remains out on who’s to blame for the dissent between the two coaches. Regardless, Daboll can’t allow similar controversy to follow, as he continues to remake his coaching staff after Year 2.

The Giants want to be in headlines for winning games, not because of dissension in the ranks. That’s not the team’s mission statement, and it never has been. It can’t be allowed to happen again next season, or Daboll might be out in New York.
