There are more names that continue to pop up for the NY Giants in terms of who they might take at No. 6 overall. Following his showing at the NFL Combine, J.J. McCarthy has skyrocketed his stock and a move to East Rutherford is in play. Obviously, Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze are targets too.
However, don't forget that the G-Men gave up 85 sacks last season, which is why Schoen and Co. could decide to use their first-round pick on a star offensive lineman. Joe Alt and Olu Fashanu are rockstars and they'd make sense in the Top 10. In a new NFL.com Mock Draft, though, Lance Zirlein has the Giants taking Alabama's JC Latham. What?
The Giants reaching for JC Latham at No. 6 overall would be infuriating
"I understand that many Giants fans are clamoring for a change at quarterback, but it's tough to pass up on a chance to grab your first choice at a position of major need. Latham is my top tackle in this draft."Lance Zirlein
The last time the Giants drafted an offensive tackle out of Alabama - well, yeah, things didn't go as planned. We're of course talking about right tackle Evan Neal, who has been a total disappointment for this team since being taken No. 7 overall in the 2022 draft.
There have been talks of moving Neal to guard, which would open the door for a new stud OT like Latham to be brought in. However, taking Latham that high? No chance. If Schoen is set on replacing Neal in the first round and sticking with Daniel Jones as his QB1 for the long haul, then Alt or Fashanu would make way more sense.
Latham is a great player, don't get us wrong. He's a 6-6, 340-pounder who is a monster in the trenches. With that said, we just don't see him as a Top 10 pick. If Schoen wants to take a gamble on someone, make it Odunze or Nabers, a WR1 this team has been begging for.
This is a make-or-break draft for Schoen. People remain furious with him for giving Jones his massive extension last March, plus plenty of people are angry over both Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney not getting tagged. Could you imagine the reaction if he goes with Latham at No. 6? Don't even think about it, Joe.
