1. Mazi Smith, DT Dallas Cowboys: Round 1, Pick 26

When the Dallas Cowboys were on the clock at pick 26, they had several strong options on the board. Georgia's Nolan Smith and Clemson pass-rushers Bryan Bresee and Myles Murphy were available on defense.

On the offensive side of the ball, Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer was still there for the selection. After allowing Dalton Schultz to walk in free agency, adding a player such as Mayer would have filled a major need for the Cowboys. With his addition, the offense would gain a potential game-changer at the position. He has elite upside through the air and could become yet another option in this loaded offense.

But instead of making the move to add Mayer, the Cowboys opted to address the interior of the defensive line. This came with the addition of Michigan's Mazi Smith, which many beleived was a reach at the selection.

During his Michigan tenure, Smith showcased an above-average skill set. He proved that he can win throughout the defensive front, and can get into the backfield with ease. But in a defensive tackle class loaded with talent, the Cowboys could have had other strong options in the second or third round. Passing on a player such as Mayer could prove to be a major regret for this group. While Smith will likely contribute early in his NFL career, Mayer could have played a key role for Dak Prescott.
