Nightmare NY Giants start vs. Browns is fully on Brian Daboll not making a change

The worst start possible for the Giants.

You can only laugh at this point. In their showdown with the Cleveland Browns, the NY Giants needed to get off to the best start possible to set the tone for this must-win game. Instead, things were a total nightmare. That's because second-year running back Eric Gray fumbled the opening kickoff, putting things on a platter for the Browns.

During his rookie season, Gray was way too inconsistent on special teams and he proved he couldn't be trusted as a returner. Yet, Brian Daboll and his staff haven't learned a thing, with Gray once again showcasing some loose hands. His inexcusable fumble led to a Deshaun Watson dime to Amari Cooper. It took 11 seconds for NY to fumble and then Cleveland to go up 7-0.

NY Giants RB Eric Gray can't be trusted as a returner for this team

That's just frustrating to watch. Gray made a splash in the summer thanks to his two-touchdown performance against the Lions in the preseason, but no one has forgotten about him being a liability for special teams in 2023.

The fact that he was sent out as the return man following the Cleveland TD was a bit frustrating too. Daboll and his coaches are taking a gamble with Gray and it's not paying off. These kinds of mistakes can't happen, especially when you're playing a team as talented as the Browns.

Injuries have been absolutely brutal for the Giants, but a different plan has to be put in place at returner. Gray, again, can't be trusted. It's on Daboll as head coach to make changes when things aren't working out. The Giants are fighting tooth and nail with the Browns - let's hope this fumble and the Cleveland score doesn't prove to be the difference in preventing them from improving to 1-2.
