NY Giants 53-man roster prediction ahead of the preseason opener
Corners: Deonte Banks, Cor'Dale Flott, Dru Phillips, Nick McCloud, Tre Hawkins and Darnay Holmes
This is looking to be the weakest position on the team heading into the regular season. However, the cornerbacks room is extremely young and full of potential. Players like Cor'Dale Flott and Dru Phillips could easily emerge as starting-level players in no time, which would be impressive given where they were drafted.
The only noteworthy player from the position who gets cut in this scenario is Tre Herndon, who signed with the Giants in the offseason. Unfortunately, he has had a quiet camp and while he isn't great, Darnay Holmes likely provides a higher floor at the position thanks to his poise as a tackler.
With enough luck, the Giants' youngsters in the secondary can break out in 2024 and provide the team some real value. We know what Deonte Banks can provide, but it's up to the rest to show what they can do in a starting role.
Safeties: Jason Pinnock, Tyler Nubin, Dane Belton and Jalen Mills
It has yet to be seen who will start once the season rolls around. However, these four seem like the best choice to make the roster. The only toss-up was potentially removing Jalen Mills for a younger option like Gervarious Owens. However, Mills provides a lot as a run defender, which the Giants don't have much of in the secondary.
Not that Jason Pinnock or Tyler Nubin are necessarily bad at tackling, they aren't, but Mills was a top run defending safety in the NFL according to PFF. This could be incredibly valuable in certain situations, not to mention the experience Mills provides, which could help everyone in the secondary improve.
Specialists: Graham Gano, Jamie Gillan and Casey Kreiter
The Giants have had an incredibly consistent special teams unit over the last couple of seasons, so it's not surprising to see any change. While Graham Gano is getting up there in age, he's still a top kicker in the NFL. Some will give him flack for last season, but Gano was dealing with an injury.
Hopefully, Jamie Gillan can remain the Scottish Hammer he has been for the Giants. He's struggled with consistency in the past, but if he can remain as good as he was last season, New York may finally have a punter for the long run.
