With limited salary cap and several roster holes to fill, the New York Giants find themselves in NFL purgatory ahead of April's draft. Armed with the No. 6 overall pick and a history of first-round trades, general manager Joe Schoen faces the challenge of building a competitive roster for the 2024 season.

Luckily for Schoen and the G-Men, the Giants have seven picks in the upcoming draft and a true playmaker will surely be on the way come draft night. Will it be a quarterback to replace Daniel Jones? Maybe a new star receiver for Danny Dimes instead?

NY Giants 2024 draft picks

  • Round 1: No. 6 overall
  • Round 2: No. 39 overall
  • Round 2: No. 47 overall (via Seattle)
  • Round 3: No. 70 overall
  • Round 4: No. 108 overall
  • Round 5: No. 140 overall
  • Round 6: No. 185 overall

The Giants gained an extra second-round pick by trading Leonard Williams to Seattle, but lost a seventh-round pick in acquiring Isaiah Simmons. With that said, holding four picks in the Top 100 provides flexibility to address various positions of need.

With a history of bold moves in the first round, Schoen's willingness to maneuver either up or down adds intrigue to the team's draft strategy. The Giants have options: move back and target a standout wideout or perhaps move up for a franchise quarterback, similar to last year's move for Deonte Banks.

Have the Giants selected No. 6 overall before?

The Giants have picked No. 6 overall four times in franchise history. Notably, in 2019, they surprised countless fans by selecting Daniel Jones, who, despite showing glimpses of greatness, has yet to be the home run many hoped for. The other three instances occurred consecutively from 1946-1948:

  • 1946: Steve Filipowicz, FB
  • 1947: George Franck, HB
  • 1948: Billy Hillenbrand, HB

While the No. 6 pick doesn't guarantee a star, it offers an opportunity to land a franchise cornerstone. With three quarterbacks likely off the board before their selection, the Giants could aim to secure a world-class offensive tackle or receiver.

History of the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft

The No. 6 overall pick has yielded star players in recent years, including offensive tackles in 2022 and 2023. Notable selections from the last 10 years include:

  • 2023: Paris Johnson, OT, Cardinals
  • 2022: Ikem Ekwonu, OT, Panthers
  • 2021: Jaylen Waddle, WR, Dolphins
  • 2020: Justin Herbert, QB, Chargers
  • 2019: Daniel Jones, QB, Giants
  • 2018: Quenton Nelson, OG, Colts
  • 2017: Jamal Adams, S, Jets
  • 2016: Ronnie Stanley, OT, Ravens
  • 2015: Leonard Williams, DE, Jets
  • 2014: Jake Matthews, OT, Falcons

This track record suggests the Giants could land a significant talent at the sixth spot, continuing the trend of impactful players. Grabbing a player like Quenton Nelson or Justin Herbert can shift the franchise's trajectory completely.

Giants 2025 draft outlook

Looking ahead to 2025, the Giants should be optimistic about their draft prospects. While standings and trades could alter the landscape, their current draft picks by round in 2025 are as follows:

  • Round 1
  • Round 2
  • Round 3
  • Round 4
  • Round 5
  • Round 5 (Seattle)
  • Round 7
  • Round 7 (Buffalo)

Acquiring additional picks through trades, the Giants aim to continue their rebuild and ascend back into contention in the NFC East with a promising 2024 rookie class. The future holds promise, especially with new coaching staff additions and a healthier roster, signaling a potential resurgence for the Giants in the coming years.
