4 NY Giants who could earn a starting job during training camp
• Running back is a position to watch thanks to the Saquon Barkley drama
1. LB Darrian Beavers
While Darrian Beavers already had a solid chance to start at linebacker alongside Okereke in 2023, the recent Jarrad Davis injury makes it almost seem like a guarantee that Beavers will start. That is unless the Giants decide to sign a veteran and play him over Beavers. While we'd like to see what Beavers can do, there is still a solid chance this happens.
It may be crazy to get so excited over a sixth-round pick who only played in two preseason games. However, what he showed in those preseason games, compared to what Micah McFadden showed in a whole season, sheds some light on why we're so hyped. McFadden wasn't the worst for a fifth-round rookie, but he showed flashes of Tae Crowder at several moments.
Maybe McFadden can improve, we hope he does. However, even if this happens, Beavers' abilities in coverage could make him the better candidate to start regardless. Okereke is already an elite run-stopper, so playing a coverage specialist alongside him would bring some much-needed versatility to the Giants' linebacker core.
Who knows what will happen by the time the season starts. Regardless, Beavers must perform well during training camp and the preseason if he wants to guarantee his odds of starting. If he pans out, the Giants and Schoen will have gotten some pretty incredible value in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
