NY Giants fans already calling for Tommy DeVito to be QB2 over Drew Lock

Too early to give DeVito the nod over Lock?

The NY Giants preseason kicked off with a 14-3 win over the Detroit Lions. With Daniel Jones not playing in this one, all eyes were on Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito. Lock got the start for the Giants and it was an ugly debut for him. Lock went just 4-of-10 for 17 yards. The worst part of his night was an ill-advised interception into double coverage.

Not only was the interception bad, but he missed a wide open Malik Nabers who was streaking down the sideline. Lock averaged just 4.3 yards per attempt in a game he’d like to forget. It wasn’t all on Lock, though, as the offensive line seemed to struggle while he was in the game.

Tommy DeVito came on in relief for Lock and brought the spark for the Giants through the crowd and through his play on the field. DeVito went 8-of-15 for 92 yards. He averaged 11.5 yards per attempt. He also led the Giants on a long touchdown drive and was part of both scoring drives for the team. Giants fans have already begun discussing the possibility that DeVito is simply better than Lock. DeVito is of course familiar with the Brian Daboll offense and seems to have plenty of support from his head coach.

Will Tommy DeVito save his Giants career this summer?

You don’t want to overreact to the first preseason game of the season, but it’s very noticeable the way the team responds when DeVito is running the show. It seems like he provides a spark that just can’t be quantified through statistics. He obviously brings that out in people in the stands, as he’s a known fan favorite and a local hero. In his brief stint starting last year, he had eight touchdowns to just three interceptions, while throwing for 1,101 yards on 178 attempts.

Lock is a former second-round pick and has shown flashes of good play throughout his NFL career, but the noise that Lock could be competing for the starting job is clearly a reach. The reality is Lock is more likely to be competing for the Giants backup job, as DeVito continues to turn heads. The big question will be if the Giants can manage to carry three quarterbacks on this roster. If Daboll decides to keep three, then DeVito is safe. However, if only two spots are open, who wins that QB2 job?

Right now, the buzz on social media is that DeVito has the upperhand on Lock. The former Denver and Seattle QB looked rough vs. Detroit, with his interception being downright silly. It's simply too early to call him a Big Blue bust after less than a quarter, but DeVito sure looks ready to push him for that backup spot.
