NY Giants going after ex-Pro Bowl QB won't fix their Daniel Jones problem

Now that you've had a little time to breathe and shake off some anger, how are you feeling about the performance of NY Giants quarterback Daniel Jones? Plenty of fans remain furious, with even more calling for Jones to hit the bench and never start again.

That's not going to happen. We admit, our frustration was pretty dang high after Jones tossed his two interceptions in the first quarter, including the pick-six. Because of this, the idea has been floated around of the G-Men signing Ryan Tannehill to come in and push for the starting job. Is it intriguing? Sure, but we can't just throw in the towel on Jones after one bad quarter in a preseason game following his torn ACL.

The NY Giants can't give up on Daniel Jones just yet

Tannehill somehow remains a free agent and he has been linked to several teams. The list includes the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings. However, the Giants invested in a quality backup quarterback this offseason when they gave Drew Lock a $5 million deal for the 2024 campaign.

Not only that, but fan favorite signal-caller Tommy DeVito remains in East Rutherford and it's likely Brian Daboll is going to keep three QBs on the roster. There's some depth behind Jones in case things go south early on this fall.

Tannehill is a nice idea, as he's a former Pro Bowler with a ton of experience, but there's no need to panic and bring him in. Keep in mind that he's probably going to want a decent amount of money, something the Giants can't afford at the moment.

Danny Dimes called himself out after the loss to Texans and Daboll admitted that there were two plays they'd like to have back. Those plays were of course the nightmare pick-six and the INT that came when Jones tried to hit Jalin Hyatt deep.

While those were a bummer, we did see Jones get into a bit of a groove in the second quarter, highlighted by a 44-yard bomb to Darius Slayton. There were some other throws as well to Malik Nabers that had people excited. Maybe he was shaking off some rust after all?

It's hard to defend Jones looking the way he did vs. Houston in Year 6, but Daboll did point out some positives. It's easy to jump the gun and give up, but we can't overvalue how things go in a preseason game. We did at first, which was a mistake. Jones deserves the chance to prove his haters wrong in '24. If he struggles and looks awful, then sure, go to the bench and bring in Lock or DeVito. But Tannehill? Skip it.
