The New York Giants are entering a pivotal season in 2024, but prior to the excitement NFL free agency and the NFL Draft will bring, the team has some salary cap woes to figure out. At the moment, the team is projected to have a little less than $28 million available to fix the glaring holes in their roster, according to Spotrac. It’s not among the most in the league, not even close, but it isn’t chump change either.

Still, with some premier players available this offseason, and the Giants picking near the top of the NFL Draft once again, it’s possible they’re going to have to clear some space. Alas, that’s where the infamous restructuring of contracts comes in, which allows teams to kick the can down the road a little bit.

It’s not always the desired way to do business, especially for general manager Joe Schoen, but it’s the situation the Giants find themselves in at the moment. With that said, here are four players on Big Blue’s roster who could see their contract restructured over the next couple of months:

4. DT Dexter Lawrence

One of Dave Gettleman’s best moves, if not No. 1 on the list, was drafting Dexter Lawrence out of Clemson during the 2019 NFL Draft. Since then, Lawrence has risen to become arguably the top nose tackle in the entire league, putting his stamp on games each week.

When Schoen took over the team, many wanted Gettleman’s mistakes purged, but Lawrence was far from that. He was one of the players the former Buffalo Bills assistant inherited with some serious talent, and that’s why he inked him to a four-year, $90 million contract when he was able to.

While Lawrence isn’t going anywhere in the near future, as he’s a building block to a brighter future, the Giants might have to come calling towards their star defender for some extra coin in 2024. His cap hit is a lofty $22 million for next season, and it’s not like he’s going anywhere anytime soon. This wouldn’t be a case where a deadbeat player ravages the cap for years to come.

Lawrence deserves every cent he receives from the Giants. For the good of the team’s cap, he might just have to receive it differently, making him one of Schoen’s first calls when he’s restructuring contracts.
