NY Giants must cut ties with failed third-round CB as soon as possible
As training camp begins, everyone can't wait for the season to arrive and watch playmakers do their thing. Though unproven, the NY Giants have brought in a lot of young talent this offseason. One of the biggest question marks on the team is the secondary. It is the most crowded room on the team.
Joe Schoen added safety Tyler Nubin and corner Dru Philips via the draft. They also added veterans Jalen Mills, Tre Herndon, and David Long Jr. via free agency. One player the Giants must move on from, however, is cornerback Aaron Robinson. The 2021 cornerback has proven to be a bust and it's time for the Giants to move on from the third-round pick. Here's why.
Aaron Robinson can't stay healthy for the NY Giants and his time should be up
Robinson just isn't durable as a player. Since being drafted in 2021, the young CB has only appeared in 11 games - nine games his rookie season and two his second year. Robinson, who suffered a torn ACL in 2022, never saw the field in 2023, spending the entire campaign out injured. The UCF product seemed like he had promise, but with him out of action to start camp and on the PUP list, enough is enough.
Looking back at the 2021 NFL Draft, the Giants were among several teams interested in getting Robinson and they actually traded up ahead of a couple of teams in order to select him. An impressive physical press-man corner with 4.3 speed and a 37-inch vert, Giants fans thought Robinson could be a great corner for Big Blue, but with the big infusion of talent added this offseason alone, Robinson seems like an afterthought.
With the extensive time Robinson has missed, the Giants can't trust him to go out and get a spot on this team. Can you put your trust in a corner to play significant snaps if he has only seen 11 games in three years? The Giants will trust Deonte Banks to be the CB1 and Cor'Dale Flott is going to get the first look at CB2.
It is a huge logjam at the corner position. Flott, Herndon, and Nick McCloud are the names that have come up very often. Herndon is a six-year NFL veteran who spent his entire career with the Jacksonville Jaguars before coming over this year in free agency. He has played in 31 games over the past two seasons. Herndon is durable, and still only 28, and could come in and steal that other spot.
Flott and McCloud have flashed many times and Giants fans and coaches alike have taken notice. With the veteran corner/safety Mills and the developmental cornerback Hawkins coming along, camp battles are going to be intense but fun to watch. With all of that said, those battles won't and shouldn't be including Robinson. It's time for NY to release him. The Giants just can't trust him moving forward.
