The NY Giants have the potential to be a surprise team this season, but one of the main things they'll have to figure out is the quarterback position. While Daniel Jones will begin the season as the starting quarterback, Big Blue's depth behind the veteran signal-caller remains a question mark. With the deadline approaching for all NFL teams to finalize their 53-man roster, the G-Men have a lot of important decisions to make.

The Giants signed veteran quarterback Drew Lock earlier this offseason as Tyrod Taylor's replacement, who signed with the Jets in free agency. The G-Men brought in the former Seahawks and Broncos quarterback with the hopes of him being the backup behind Jones and giving Tommy DeVito competition; however, there is a lot of uncertainty around Lock. The veteran suffered an oblique injury in the Giants' first preseason game against the Lions and has not played in the last two games against the Texans or Jets.

All eyes now turn to DeVito, who Giants fans are familiar with after Jones and Taylor suffered injuries last season. DeVito stepped up when called upon and quickly became a fan favorite in New York for his antics, like his iconic Italian hand gesture when he took the field and completed touchdown passes. Now, though, the questions begs: will the Giants keep him on the 53-man roster or end up cutting him?

The Giants can't afford to release Tommy DeVito ahead of Week 1

Yes, Jones and Lock will make the roster, but it wouldn't be a shock if the Giants rostered a third quarterback. Despite Jones's struggles on the field throughout the preseason, he will be the true starter. Still, his injury history remains a concern, especially after recovering from a torn ACL last year. The Giants are being cautious with Lock right now, but he didn't look strong in his short amount of time on the field during the preseason.

If there's anything we learned from last season, the more depth at quarterback, the better. Jones was one of seven starting quarterbacks to suffer a season-ending injury last year. While DeVito was the third-string quarterback, he still had the opportunity to play with Taylor sidelined last year with injuries. Tommy Cutlets is a great candidate to fill that role again for Big Blue or even take on the backup role while Lock is still recovering.

It's also worth mentioning that DeVito played well last year with a weaker offensive line. We can expect an even better season from him this year with an improved offensive line consisting of new additions like Jermaine Elumenor, Jon Runyan Jr., and Greg Van Roten.

He may not have had the most impressive stats in the Giants' preseason finale against the Jets and was sacked eight times; he was also playing behind the second and third-team offensive line and was throwing to wide receivers who won't make the team. You can't fault DeVito for what happened in the preseason finale loss to the Jets. With so much uncertainty at the position, cutting him and risking losing him to waivers to be a massive mistake. Brian Daboll needs to keep him around.
