Can't say we're surprised by this move.

As we all know, the best ability is availability and that just didn't ring true for the NY Giants with veteran safety/cornerback Jalen Mills. Mills was signed this offseason to not only push for a roster spot, but provide veteran leadership for a young secondary.

That won't be the case, as he's on his way out of town before even putting on the pads for Big Blue. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Giants decided to release him ahead of the Week 2 preseason contest against the Texans. We can't say we're too surprised by this:

The NY Giants have released veteran defensive back Jalen Mills

Per Schefter, Mills is expected to receive plenty of interest now that he's a free agent once again. He was dealing with a calf issue with the Giants, which unfortunately played a big role in Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll deciding to part ways with him.

Throughout his career, Mills has played for the Eagles and Patriots. He's now looking for a new place to call home. While some fans are worried about the DB depth, keep in mind that Schoen signed safeties Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland prior to the Mills news dropping.

Neither guy is a splash move by any means, but with the Giants dealing with other injuries at the position, it made sense for Schoen to bring in some depth to help out this weekend against the Texans. Plenty of people are still hoping the Giants sign Justin Simmons, but that's unlikely.

Simmons, a four-time All-Pro pick, has taken recent visits to meet with the Saints and Falcons. At this point, it's looking like he'll be playing in the NFC South next season, unless a surprise team jumps in at the last second to steal him away from New Orleans or Atlanta. As for Mills, things didn't work for him in East Rutherford due to his calf strain. The Giants simply couldn't wait for him to get back to 100 percent.
