As soon as Wink Martindale lit up Brian Daboll and resigned as NY Giants defensive coordinator, there was plenty of speculation that Mike Kafka could be the next one on his way out. Rumors swirled that Kafka also had big-time beef with Coach Dabs.
A bomb of a report from Pat Leonard revealed Kafka had his play-calling duties taken away by Daboll multiple times last season, only adding fuel to the proverbial fire. However, leave it to Kafka to silence things on his own with the draft around the corner. While speaking with the media, Kafka made it more than clear that he has no issues at all with the Big Blue head man.
Mike Kafka is thrilled to be back with the NY Giants this season
"I love working with Dabs, I love working for Dabs. It's been a collaborative process. Have we gotten all the results that we wanted each and every day - sure, we want to go and win every single game, but sometimes that doesn't happen, so we go through the ups and downs from a season. We're all competitive, we all want to win and that's what I love about him. "Mike Kafka
While Kafka didn't go into what happened last season, he also did not confirm nor deny he'll be calling plays in 2024. The door is very much open for Daboll to take over that role, but it looks like Kafka is thrilled to be back with the G-Men regardless of how things go down.
During the offseason, Kafka had multiple head coach interviews and the Seahawks even had interest in giving him a look to be their new OC. However, the Giants front office blocked that interview request, locking Kafka in as their OC for the third consecutive season.
Things of course didn't go to plan for Kafka in '23, but the same can be said for everyone in East Rutherford. The Giants went 6-11 and plenty of guys on staff lost their jobs. However, Kafka is back and he's focused and ready to help this team try and get back to the postseason. Knowing he and Daboll are on the same page too will calm plenty of Big Blue supporters.
