The New York Giants are still a little over a week away from the start of the 2025 regular season, traveling south to Washington, DC. Before Week 1 officially begins, the five captains for this upcoming season have been announced. There were some surprises, some expectancies, and one nomination that proves undeniable faith.

Russell Wilson, who won his spot as the starting quarterback before the preseason even began, was named as one of the five. With so much talk about what was going on behind him on the depth chart, he seemed like a lost figure this offseason.
But his placement above everyone but four other players on the 53-man roster gives some new light on what he means to his brethren. Wilson might have just officially won over the locker room, and that can only mean good things for the start of the season.
Russell Wilson's captaincy proves he's Giants' locker-room leader
Jackson Dart and Jameis Winston lit up the social media world this training camp and preseason, with their stellar play and media coverage. Wilson seemed to be an afterthought, but with the season around the corner, it's the perfect time to insert the former Walter Payton Award winner into the limelight.
Many have figured that Wilson would be a short-term solution to a long-term problem. But, with a sturdy QB room that is fighting for every opportunity to dethrone Wilson, that pressure might give No. 3 a new fire.
During his tenure in Seattle, he was the guy. There was never any doubt of trying to grab another quarterback to right his wrongs, and instead, he tried to surround him with sensational talent like Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and Kenneth Walker III.
Now with the unknown talent around him, Wilson has to figure out a way to right the ship in East Rutherford. Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Theo Johnson are going to be a big part of his game plan, and it is uncertain how long head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen will let the 13-year veteran go with Dart waiting in the wings.
As of now, he has some respect back on his name, being named the captain of this team. It is usually a shoe-in if you are the team's starting quarterback to get the honor. The team unanimously voted for Wilson to be a leader, and this team will benefit from it.
Schoen has nothing but praise for the veteran thrower, and his expectation is for him to take his lengthy experience as a leader of Super Bowl-winning squads to this wildcard group.
"As far as Russell, the leadership's been tremendous from the minute he walked in the building, not just on offense or in the quarterback room but across the entire team," Schoen said. "He's looked good this camp. He had a good camp, he's in good shape and [I'm] excited to see what it looks like come the regular season."
Things are turning a corner here in East Rutherford.
