The New York Giants are desperate for a quarterback, and this offseason is critical for the franchise to bring in the signal caller who can help lead Big Blue back to the postseason.
Sitting at No. 3 in the NFL Draft, the Giants face challenges with Cleveland and Tennessee ahead in the order, as both teams are expected to draft quarterbacks. This leaves New York with a few options: wait until day two to draft a quarterback, sign a short-term veteran in free agency, or even trade for one.
A rookie quarterback could help Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen rebuild for the franchise's future. The Giants are aiming to draft Colorado's Shedeur Sanders or Miami's Cam Ward, but if both are off the board when New York is on the clock, they might consider Jalen Milroe, Jaxson Dart, or Quinn Ewers in the second round.
Many believe the Giants will draft a young quarterback and pair him with a veteran free agent to mentor the rookie. Some free-agent options the Giants could explore include Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, or Russell Wilson.
The third and final option is trading for a quarterback, though the market remains unclear, and it’s uncertain what teams would demand in return.
Two quarterbacks who could be trade targets for the Giants are Minnesota’s JJ McCarthy and Atlanta’s Kirk Cousins. However, one sports talk radio host has floated a bold idea: trading for an NFC East rival quarterback.
Chris McMonigle's take is straight out of a movie: Deion, Shedeur, and Dak, oh my!
WFAN’s Chris McMonigle speculated that with the Dallas Cowboys’ head coaching position now vacant following Mike McCarthy's departure, owner Jerry Jones could opt for a rebuild that includes moving on from veteran quarterback Dak Prescott. McMonigle suggested the Giants could be a potential landing spot.
One name rumored to replace McCarthy as Cowboys head coach is Colorado’s Deion Sanders. The Pro Football Hall of Famer played five seasons with the Cowboys, helping them win their third title in four years in 1995. Sanders also won a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers the previous year, earning his first championship ring.
Coach Prime already has ties to the Cowboys organization, and many believe he would bring his son Shedeur Sanders to Dallas if hired. This could push Prescott to the trade block, making him available to quarterback-needy teams like the Giants.
Shedeur Sanders is reportedly “very open” to the idea of becoming the next franchise QB of the Dallas Cowboys.

Multiple NFL executives/scouts reportedly believe Jerry Jones would “easily” do one of the following in order to acquire Shedeur and Deion Sanders.

While McMonigle’s theory is intriguing, the likelihood of Prescott being traded is slim to just about none. Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million extension with Dallas in September, which includes $231 million in guaranteed money. This massive contract makes it difficult for another team to absorb, even one as desperate as the Giants.
Additionally, it’s highly unlikely that Dallas would trade Prescott to a division rival. Helping Big Blue solve its quarterback dilemma isn’t something Jerry Jones would be keen on. Even if the Giants somehow acquired Prescott, it wouldn’t necessarily fix their problems. Prescott’s presence would put immense pressure on the team to win immediately in what will be a make-or-break season for Daboll and Schoen.
If the Giants fail to win in 2025 with Prescott, it could further set the franchise back. Trading for him would cost future draft picks and limit New York’s ability to spend in free agency due to his hefty contract.
In the end, while McMonigle’s idea is an interesting hypothetical, the reality of bringing Dak Prescott to New York is far more complicated than it seems.
