Tom Brady did not hold back when discussing Daniel Jones’ messy departure from the New York Giants. During the Fox broadcast of the Giants’ Thanksgiving Day loss to the Cowboys, Brady criticized Jones for requesting his release after being benched.

“I don’t know how that whole situation went down,” Brady said, “but to think that you’d ask for a release from a team that committed a lot to you is maybe different from how I would’ve handled that.”

Brady added that earning the trust and respect of his teammates, regardless of the situation. He also claimed he would have shown up every day, even if it meant playing scout team safety, as Jones did in his final practices with the Giants.

Tom Brady shows how out of touch he is with Daniel Jones comment

While Brady’s comments may resonate with fans who admire loyalty, they fail to consider the complexities of Jones’ situation. The Giants did not simply bench Jones; they effectively removed him from their future plans. By limiting his reps and altering his workout program, they made it clear their priority was avoiding a $23 million injury guarantee for 2025.

Jones did not walk away from a team that believed in him. He asked to leave a situation where he was reduced to standing in as a practice safety for the sole purpose of protecting the Giants’ financial interests. It was not quitting; it was a response to the writing on the wall.

The comparison to Brady’s career is also flawed. Brady, one of the greatest players in NFL history, was never benched for business reasons or relegated to a meaningless role. It is hard to imagine him embracing such treatment without taking issue.

By asking for his release, Jones avoided the indignity of staying in a toxic environment and instead joined the Minnesota Vikings practice squad, where he can focus on resetting his career. On the other hand, the Giants continue to face scrutiny for their mismanagement of the quarterback position and the dysfunction within the organization.

Brady’s critique ignores the reality that business decisions go both ways in the NFL. The Giants made one by sidelining Jones, and Jones made one by leaving. It is easy to preach loyalty from a position of unparalleled success, but for Jones, staying was not about earning respect; it was about being stuck in a role that offered no future.

While Brady’s comments created headlines, they fail to address the real issue. The Giants did not just mishandle Jones; they mishandled the entire situation. For Jones, taking control of his own fate might have been the only choice he had.
