The New York Giants have a new quarterback and his name is J.J. McCarthy. Yes, THAT J.J. McCarthy. The same one that the Vikings took in the first round two years ago and never lived up to the hype of being taken that high.
Now McCarthy is coming to the Big Apple and it's not a terrible move for the G-Men in all honesty. Jameis Winston has struggled in his two games since taking over for the injured Jaxson Dart and maybe -- just maybe -- John Harbaugh and Matt Nagy can figure out what's been ailing McCarthy as a pro and fix him.
But enough about that. Let's talk about what everyone really wants to know, which is what jersey number McCarthy is going to wear when he suits up with the Giants for the first time. McCarthy infamously once said that his alter ego is Nine, hence why he wore that number in Minnesota, but that number has been claimed already by tight end Isaiah Likely and it doesn't feel likely (ha) that he'd give it up to a quarterback who might not even start anytime soon.
What number is J.J. McCarthy going to wear in New York?
Well, before we speculate, let's discuss which numbers aren't available. We already touched on how No. 9, McCarthy's jersey number with the Vikings and at Michigan, is taken by Likely so that's out.
Dart wears No. 6, so that's not available either. Jameis Winston dons No. 19. That right there, leaves us with 0-5 and 7-18. Quarterbacks can't wear anything above 19 though with the ever-changing jersey number rules, who knows how real of a rule that still is.
Out of those numbers I touched on just now, only 4, 7, 10, 11, 14, 16, and 18 are available, so McCarthy has some options. 10, of course, was worn by the great Eli Manning and no one has worn it since he retired so that's probably off the table too.
That leaves 4, 7, 11, 14, 16, and 18. No. 18 just became available when Jake Haener was waived and this one makes the most sense because one plus eight equals nine. Get it?
Then again, McCarthy might decide he only likes solo numbers and could go with 4 or 7 instead. Either way, we'll all be on the edge of our seats until a decision is made by the Giants' newest signal-caller. Don't leave us hanging, J.J!
