Antrel Rolles Into Chicago Leaving New York Giants

There’s always a good and bad to free agency, unfortunately, it just got bad for the New York Giants. Veteran Giants’ safety and captain Antrel Rolle signed with the Chicago Bears last night leaving the team with a major question at the safety position. It seemed evident that Rolle was going to sign with the Giants having a love for the city, but the Bears just made him a offer he couldn’t refuse.

The 32-year old signed a three year/$11.25 million contract for the Bears, including five-million guaranteed, which is a more than a decent amount for his age.

You could expect that Rolle was looking for security towards the end of his career and believed Chicago wanted him more with that offer. Rolle came into the Big Apple five years ago and has been nothing less than stellar at safety.

He played every single game of his five year contract that he signed in 2010 and was a crucial part of that amazing 2011 Super Bowl Giants team. Rolle also went onto the Pro Bowl in 2010 and 2013, eventually making him captain for the defensive unit.

A player like Rolle was what the Giants needed, especially after hiring defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Yes, Rolle was climbing the age ladder, but brought a lot to the field; on and off. A leader and mentor to the rookies in that Giants locker room and there’s no doubt he’ll be missed. The first-round draft pick recorded 464 tackles and grabbed 14 interceptions during his five year stint with the Giants.

Rolle’s future with Giants became in doubt in the coming weeks before free agency as there was no offers coming from the GMen. It was believed that Rolle was the Giants’ top priority as they have virtually no one at the safety position and with him gone; it’s a problem.

The boys in blue need to come up with something fast now that Rolle is out of New York. They’ve made some solid signings so far on defense and now it’s time to pick up a safety to replace Rolle. It will be difficult not only finding a talent like Rolle, but his leadership as well. It was something that head coach Tom Coughlin admired the most.

Rolle is gone and will certainly be missed, but now it’s time for both parties to just keep on rolling.
