2015 NFL Draft: New York Giants Should Trade Back

facebooktwitterreddit

With the 2015 NFL Draft almost here, it is common knowledge that the New York Giants are slated to pick at No. 9 overall. By now you have likely read countless mock drafts stating numerous reasons as why the Giants should take a number of different players at that spot in the draft.

I disagree with every last one of them.

The Giants should not pick any player at No. 9. Yes, you read that right, the Giants should pick no player at nine overall.

Why, you ask?

Well the answer is simple; Jerry Reese should trade back and attempt to take safety Landon Collins later on in the draft. Collins is an awesome prospect, a prospect with a chance to be a future Pro Bowler in the NFL. Collins also happens to play safety; a position that is unquestionably a major area of weakness for the Giants defense.

Not only would Reese be filling the Giants No. 1 area of weakness by drafting Collins, but he’d also be acquiring a player that appears to be as close to a sure thing as you will and can find in the draft. To quickly sum it up this is all about value. I do not see the value in drafting a safety at nine overall, no matter the talent of such player.

Nevertheless, with a player of Collins’ caliber, I see no issue taking him later in round one. Now, I’m not an NFL insider so I must admit I have little to no clue on how a trade like this would be orchestrated.

However, with eleven picks separating the Giants and the Eagles (where Collins is most often being predicted to get drafted) I see no reason why Reese would not be able to trade back, even if slightly to take Collins at some point after the No. 9 pick.

If Reese can accomplish this trade, he’d manage to draft the best fitting player in the draft for the Giants while creating value by bringing in extra picks to be used in filling further holes. To me this is the very definition of a ‘win-win.’

It’d be a shocking move by a general manager whose history says he doesn’t like the idea of trading back, but forget about history. The Giants must buck the trend, and actually trade back in this year’s draft. Especially if it can be done to land Collins to help bolster their defensive secondary.
