Tom Coughlin: The Next Two Seasons Will Define His Legacy

facebooktwitterreddit

Tom Coughlin is one of the most successful head coaches in the history of the NFL. Coughlin has won two Super Bowl championships with the New York Giants. With the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Giants he has led his teams to winning seasons 10 times. Coughlin has an impressive 12-7 playoff record in his NFL coaching career. It’s hard to argue that Coughlin is a legend of the coaching profession, yet the next two seasons could still define his legacy.

A legacy is how a person is remembered. It isn’t always what was, too often it is what popular consensus remembers. People tend to remember the beginning and the end of things. Coughlin is a great coach who should be revered in the eyes of history. However his legacy may be determined by what happens in the final two seasons of his contract with the Giants.

One moment can turn you into an idiot or a genius and in the debate everything world in which we live, its not like we’re allowed to think something in between the two options.

Coughlin wouldn’t be the first person in sports with an unfair image lasting in people’s minds. We see it every day and we hear it all the time on sports radio. What just happened tends to erase all that has happened in the past.

The bitter pill to swallow is that Coughlin has been chasing his past success for a while now. The Giants have had back to back losing seasons and have missed the playoffs three years in a row. This could never erase the truth in the minds and hearts of his loyal fans, but it does threaten to tarnish his overall legacy.

The good news is things are looking up for the Giants. The organization had a strong draft class, and made a few under appreciated moves in free agency. The Giants also know that 2015 offers a new hope and a fresh start.

Injuries devastated the team in 2014. With core players returning to the line up the majority of Giants problems could be behind them. Victor Cruz, Geoff Schwartz and Jon Beason returning will have a huge impact on this team. If they can stay healthy, the Giants could shock some doubters in the 2015 regular season.

The Giants need to win, not only for their amazing fan base but to ensure that Coach Coughlin’s great legacy remains in tact. After everything the man has done for the organization, Coughlin deserves to remembered glowingly when his career is over.

No man is perfect, but Coughlin is as good as they come. Assuming that Coughlin’s career ends sooner rather than later, it would be nice to see him go out either on the doorsteps of another championship or even better hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
