Expectations for Ereck Flowers

While people think it’s easy to be a first round pick, think about it twice. With every first rounder comes certain expectations for the new season. In this case, it’s New York Giants’ first pick Ereck Flowers. The Florida native was picked for obvious reasons as the Giants’ offensive line was in a serious hole, Flowers is expected to take them out of it.

Certain expectations have been set for the 329 pound left tackle as everyone is looking for him to anchor the line for the next couple of years, at least. It’s no secret, that the Giants’ offensive line has been the main concern for a couple of years now and when a talent like Flowers fell in the Giants’ lap, he was scooped up. The transition from college to pro is hard enough as it is, but Flowers has been given the keys to the kingdom once his name got called.

Of course, nothing is set in stone, but the several injuries that the Giants endured last season has given them a reason to put their faith in Flowers. You could say that the Giants fell into a panic mode with the losses of veterans such as Will BeattyGeoff Schwartz and Justin Pugh. These issues deflated the Giants’ offense in every way possible and forced to shuffle around everything, which is clearly unstable.

Flowers has the frame and body weight to anchor any NFL line, but like any rookie, he needs to adjust to the speed level of the NFL. If it doesn’t work out at left tackle, which is his primary position, he’ll likely move to the guard position as newly acquired Marshall Newhouse looks to be in place for left tackle.

Where ever Flowers is on the line, he’s expected to adjust, stay put and avoid injury. If the big man can overcome these obstacles, then the Giants’ pick didn’t go to waste.

The Giants did their part by picking the missing piece, now it’s time to see if it fits.
