New York Giants: tonight is about confidence

The New York Giants are just hours away from their preseason game against the New York Jets. The Giants haven’t looked stellar this preseason, but its time to throw that out the window. That’s because tonight is all about confidence.

The result of this preseason game will be meaningless in the grand scheme of things. The process of playing the game is absolutely not pointless. The Giants are a team that has a lot of talent and a lot of youth. This team has the potential to work out the kinks and be successful. Tonight the kinks need to start being worked out.

With the Giants everything begins and ends with their leader, quarterback Eli Manning. This preseason, Manning has completed only 8 of his 22 passes. Yes with a completion percentage of 36.4 and a quarterback rating of 45.3 the Giants quarterback has racked up just over 60 yards this preseason.

Now these numbers haven’t all been Manning’s fault. The offensive line has performed poorly. The offense as a whole seems out of sync and miscommunication between Manning and his targets seems to be the norm. This has to change tonight. It may start with Manning but it takes a sharp effort by the entire team to win games.

The opponent tonight is the New York Jets but it doesn’t really matter. This isn’t the battle of New York, that comes in the regular season. This isn’t about beating the Jets. It’s about the Giants playing good football and giving themselves something to be confident about when they head off to Dallas to start their season.

The Giants have so many young players at key positions. That gives a lot of concern and a lot of hope. You have to think that when this team’s collective light bulb turns on and the team figures out how to win that the amount of talent they have will lead to victories. But until then there will be a lot of frustration.

So tonight is about the little things. It is about the receivers and Manning getting on the same page. It is about the offensive linemen showing it can hold their own against a very tough front seven. The Giants are going to need their offense to carry the heaviest burden this season. Tonight is about giving them the confidence to do so.
