New York Giants: Revisiting Draft Profile Of Ereck Flowers

facebooktwitterreddit

Ereck Flowers the impressive offensive tackle from Miami was the Giants first round pick. The Giants drafted a player that they believe will be part of the foundation for a bright future.

I thought it would be a good idea to look back at the draft profile that I wrote in February. I always believed that Flowers was a potential pick for the Giants, and that is why his draft profile was one of the first ones I completed.

Here is my original evaluation on Flowers that I wrote just before the Super Bowl:

Flowers is 6-foot-6 and weighs 324 pounds. With long arms, quick chopping feet and great overall strength, he figures to be a top 25 selection. There is no doubt that Flowers has the physical tools to succeed at the next level.

Flowers is possibly the best run blocking left tackle in this draft class. He does a great job at staying on his block, getting to the second level of the defense and plowing linebackers out of his ball carrier’s way.

Flowers will be instrumental in his NFL team’s screen game, as he has the athleticism and the acceleration to make blocks off the edge. His ability to run block is what makes him stand out amongst other left tackle candidates.

A left tackle however is charged with protecting the quarterback’s blind side. In this task, Flowers is surely no slouch. He has great footwork, which allows him to kick out quick edge rushers and to stay balanced against bruising bull rushers.

More from NY Giants Draft

Should the Giants head in the direction of upgrading their offensive line, Flowers would be a good start. He could develop into a consistent offensive tackle and help bolster one of the most important units on the Giants. Considering how fast their West Coast offense will be over time, it’s important to have the right protection.

Flowers is a very solid prospect. Last season, Taylor Lewan from Michigan flew up the draft boards after he showed great ability at the NFL Combine. Lewan was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the 11th overall pick. Flowers could be this year’s Lewan. Flowers is certainly somebody to keep an eye on.
