Stopping The Run:

Overview: The 2014 Giants defense gave up 4.9 yards per carry. The defensive line got pushed around. The linebacker play wasn’t good enough, though the fact that they were fighting off so many blocks didn’t help, nor did the Jon Beason injury. The Giants defense has many of the same cast of characters returning in 2015. Other than Jonathan Hankins last season, nobody on the defensive line was all that impressive on a week to week basis. The Giants added Kenrick Ellis and Owamagbe Odighizuwa to their defensive line this offseason with their sights set on fixing their run defense.

Best Case Scenario: With Hankins and Ellis in the middle of the Giants 4-3 defensive line the Giants will clog the rushing lanes inside. In the best case scenario Beason stays healthy and dominates as a run stuffing middle linebacker. The Giants get an elevated impact from Cullen Jenkins. Jay Bromley has yet to be the powerful player we know he can be, that changes in 2015. Devon Kennard and J.T. Thomas play great and make tackles in the backfield against the run. Landon Collins makes a huge impact and flies to the football and makes plays.

Worst Case Scenario: The worst case scenario is that the Giants run defense doesn’t improve drastically. This is a team that still needs to prove it, especially in the defensive front seven. On paper the run defense will be better. But if Beason gets hurt again, if Ellis isn’t the player the Giants hoped for, if the Giants get limited production from the aging Jenkins, it won’t be pretty for the Giants defense. The Giants needed to improve desperately on run defense and on paper they really have. In actuality we better see the results because you can’t win many football games giving up 4.9 yards per carry.
