Giants Get Safety Help; Sign Brandon Meriweather

In a very un-Giants move, the Giants have signed former pro-bowl safety Brandon Meriweather. Meriweather is an odd pick up for New York soley based on his trouble making past. Meriweather has been suspended 5 times for illegal hits on receivers. The Giants lack of safety depth, compounded by the loss of Mykkele Thompson for the season and Landon Collins for the next few weeks left the G-Men in desperation mode.

Meriweather has been a productive player over his career. A former first round pick of the New England Patriots in 2007, he has also spent time with the Chicago Bears and most recently the Washington Redskins. Over 8 seasons he has totaled 424 tackles, 15 interceptions, 9 forced fumbles and 6 sacks. His best season came in 2009 as a member of the Patriots.

Though he is on the downside of his career, Meriweather has played both free and strong safety. He has experience in multiple systems and has playoff experience as well. He has struggled to stay on the field though. Since 2010 Meriweather as not completed a full 16 game schedule. Since that time he has missed 29 games due to both injury and suspensions.

Meriweather will have an opportunity to play a big role for the Giants this season, if he can stay on the field. Half of that will be up to him. If he continues to head hunt opponents he won’t be doing the Giants any good from the sidelines and if he can’t stay healthy he can join an already crowded medical room.

He must stay discipline and healthy to contribute to this team. Unfortunately those are two things Meriweather has struggled with over the course of his career. I hope he steps in, plays well, and plays right but I have my reasonable doubts. I hope I’m wrong but I’m not a big fan of this move at the moment.
