New York Giants: Brandon Meriweather fills a need
By John Tolis
If there’s one word that haunts the New York Giants every season, it’s injury. After the Giants’ secondary suffered multiple injuries in last Friday’s pre-season loss against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Giants did some last minute shopping and signed longtime veteran safety, Brandon Meriweather.

The season hasn’t even started and the Giants are already worrying about injuries. Rookie safety Mykkele Thompson was forced to be cut as he suffered a torn Achilles tendon. Strong safeties Nat Berhe and this year’s second round pick Landon Collins got hit with injuries, but were both day-to-day.
In a act of desperation you can say, the Giants brought in Meriweather and waived kicker Chris Boswell to make room for the ex-Washington Redskin. Meriweather brings some experience to New York as he started in the league in 2007 with the New England Patriots and played every single game until 2010. He had brief stint with the Chicago Bears and after one year he joined the Redskins. In his career, Meriweather has tallied up 424 tackles, 15 interceptions and six sacks. Three of those sacks came last year as he only played 10 games.
You could definitely assume that Meriweather will be starting and get as many reps as possible to get familiar with Giants’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Berhe and Collins will soon get back in the pads, but with caution. Meriweather could even be played at the cornerback position as the Giants need help in that area as well.
Don’t be surprised if the Giants bring one more player on board as the injuries continue to pile on. The key to the Giants’ chances of succeeding this year was to avoid injury and evidently it’s been the opposite. The Giants can only wait and see what happens now with Meriweather and their injuries.
