Giants Sign Safety Stevie Brown

The Giants have signed safety Stevie Brown today after Brown was released by the Houston Texans. Brown had spent the last 3 seasons with the Giants before he opted to sign a 1 year deal with the Texans in the off-season. Brown’s best season was in 2012 when he intercepted 8 passes. He missed all of 2013 with a torn ACL and did not play particularly well last season.

Brown was benched after 2 games in favor of Quentin Demps but regained his starting role in the latter part of the year. It is a possibility that Brown simply needed more time to recover from his knee injury and he came on slower then he expected. His play did pick up towards the end of the season so there is some optimism for his return.

Brown obviously fills a need left by the rash of injuries to the young safeties on the Giants roster. Nat Berhe, Mykkel Thompson, Bennett Jackson, and Justin Currie are all out for the season. The healthy Giants remaining are Cooper Taylor, Landon Collins, Jeromy Miles and Brandon Merriweather. Taylor and and Collins are a little nicked up while Miles has not shown much and Merriweather looks to be a liability in coverage.

I would not call it a lock that Brown makes the roster but it may be a safe bet. The Giants know what he brings to the table and what he can do when he is fully healthy. He has a good chance to start  as well but he needs to be productive if he does so. Since his breakout 2012 season Brown has not recorded a single interception.

Every team must cut down their rosters from 90 to 75 by tomorrow. Brown will not be the only addition the Giants make to their roster between now and the start of the season. Hopefully the Giants can find some discarded gems with around 500 players set to become free agents. They can use help wherever they can get it. Stevie Brown’s re-emergence with the Giants hopefully can fix some of their problems at the backend of the secondary.
