As of this past Thursday night, the path to Super Bowl 50 has begun. Tom Brady and the New England Patriots look just as good as ever when they beat the highly touted Pittsburgh Steelers. It appears that the Patriots’ odds of making a Super Bowl repeat are pretty good. It’s their opponent that is the big question mark, but I think the Patriots are going to be seeing a familiar face this year.
My Super Bowl 50 prediction is that the Patriots and New York Giants will clash for the last time in Tom Brady’s career. Yes that’s right, you heard it here first. Call me crazy for the time being, but down the stretch it will make more sense.
History tends to repeat itself pretty often and I believe trends play a really large role in sports. So what is the trend for 2015? The trend is that the Giants seem to make an improbable Super Bowl run every time they play the AFC East in the regular season or at least it’s been that way the past two times it happened.
The Giants have all the odds stacked against them and that’s when they preform at their best. No one thinks that they stand a chance this year. The same thing was said in 2007 and look what happened. The 2007 Giants appeared to be mediocre team, just like the 2015 Giants appear to be.
In the 2006 NFL season the Giants finished 8-8. That’s only one more win than their record in 2014. How does all of this connect? One man helped bring the Giants back to glory that next year and his name is Steve Spagnuolo. Now that Spagnuolo is back again, Giants’ fans can only hope that he will work that same magic to this current Giants’ defense.
In both 2011 and 2007, the Giants had a poor preseason. Every NFL fan knows that it is very hard to judge a team off of preseason play. That was exactly the case in those respective years and it’s going to be that same case in 2015.
The Giants offense definitely has the potential to be one of the best in the league. It’s the defense that everyone is worried about. As long as the defense can keep the ship from sinking, the Giants’ offense can take care of the rest. The Giants passing offense ranking seventh last year, ahead of the Green Bay Packers and the Patriots.
Tom Coughlin’s squad managed to achieve all of this with most of their top players injured on both sides of the ball. If the Giants can stay healthy and that’s a really big if, they can be a sleeper candidate to make a run at the Super Bowl. For something like this to happen, all the pieces of the puzzle have to fall into place.
Even though this sounds very bold, there is one thing almost everyone can agree on. You can never count the Giants out until they’re officially out, especially with Eli Manning at the helm. All they have to do is make the postseason and let Manning work his playoff magic.
