1. Robert Ayers

Why imprison JPP in consecutive years when tagging Ayers would guarantee an encore of 2015’s top sack artist?

Leading a team with 9.5 sacks is admittedly a small feat in perspective of the league’s third-worst rate for the Giants’ collective unit. A similar argument can be made against Brinkley in the sense that these two guys led in statistical categories for their franchise simply because no one else did.

  • It would ease minds to witness Ayers deliver identical production for a second year in row in the same uniform but surrounded by a fine-tuned cast. That’s the beauty of the franchise tag.

Ayers’ talent, energy and rapport are all undeniable. Even before the Super Bowl, former Denver Broncos teammates and potential Giants targets subtly raved about the opportunity to line up alongside him once more. Getting Ayers on board as a recruiting chip while keeping him motivated in audition mode for another season reads as New York’s best chance for success.

No one can fault a guy for seeking an actual contract elsewhere, but they’ll deal with a franchise tag if it leads to winning.
