Round 4, 109th pick: LB B.J. Goodson, Clemson

Every year, a sizable, vocal contingent of Giants fans get their hopes up that Jerry Reese will select a linebacker early in the draft, as the unit has been inexplicably neglected in the draft for several years running. Instead, Reese typically addresses linebacker in mid-to-late rounds and through free agency, which they’ve done once again this year by taking Clemson’s B.J. Goodson in the 4th.

According to scouts, Goodson can lend support in limiting the opponent’s run game, but is limited in pass defense.

More from GMEN HQ

ESPN’s Dan Graziano was lukewarm on the pick:

"“The Giants love guys who crush it at the combine, and no linebacker in Indy this year topped Goodson’s 30 bench press reps. They had him in for a visit and like that he was a middle linebacker and team captain on a Clemson team that made it to the College Football Playoff National Championship. At best, he’s a two-down linebacker at the NFL level and can help right away on special teams.”"

Writing for CBS Sports, Spencer Hall gave the pick an A-:

"“[Goodson is a] Team captain and defensive play-caller. A bit inconsistent in coverage [but] is a great run-stopper and may earn playing time right away.”"

Mike Tanier over at Bleacher Report grades the pick a B-:

"“Goodson will be of limited use on 3rd-and-long, but coaches will love his strength and effort and will give him every chance to contribute. The Giants are trying to economize at linebacker again (though they appeared to be targeting Leonard Floyd in the first round); Goodson isn’t a complete player, but he’s not some castoff from other teams’ practice squads, either.”"

My expectation is that Goodson will be an immediate contributor for a linebacker corps in dire need of help.
