The New York Giants are attempting to restructure Dwayne Harris’ lucrative contract. If an agreement can’t be come to, he could be released.

The New York Giants came under fire in 2015 when general manager Jerry Reese handed a surprisingly lucrative deal to special teamer Dwayne Harris. The contract spans five years and projects to pay Harris $17.5 million.

Though Harris has made good on the investment, it appears as though the Giants are now looking to restructure the contract for help in free agency.

Harris isn’t being paid an amount that dramatically influences the salary cap. Every bit of cap space will help, however, as New York still has voids to fill and areas in which it must make significant improvements.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Giants are attempting to restructure Harris’ contract in order to create additional free agency flexibility. If they fail to, he could be released.

It would be difficult to see Harris released, but general manager Jerry Reese is making the difficult decisions to improve the roster.

Harris was a Pro Bowler in 2016 and made a strong showing for the Giants during the 2015 season. He caught 36 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns, and tallied 972 return yards and two return touchdowns.

He produced at a slightly lower level in 2016, but maintained his versatile role in the return game and continued to make a positive impact on the game.

Unfortunately, New York has a limited amount of cap space and significant work to do in their attempts to solidify the construction of a Super Bowl contender.

New York made early decisions to franchise tag Jason Pierre-Paul and sign wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Marshall was signed to a two-year deal worth $12 million, while Pierre-Paul’s franchise tag would make him just under $17 million.

If Harris is unwilling to restructure his current contract, then he could be released in order to alleviate New York’s financial situation.
