New York Giants: Landon Collins focused on cutting weight
New York Giants safety Landon Collins is focused on cutting his weight. He currently weighs between 218 and 220 pounds, but he hopes to get down to 210.
The New York Giants have found a gem of a strong safety in 23-year-old phenom Landon Collins. A year after his rookie campaign left a sour taste in the mouths of Giants fans around the New York-New Jersey area, his second season inspired immeasurable faith.
As Collins prepares for a third NFL season that will define the trajectory of his career, his focus has shifted to cutting his weight and improving his speed.
Collins cut a significant amount of weight from his frame between the 2015 and 2016 seasons. It resulted in what was one of the greatest seasons ever recorded by an NFL safety, let alone a Giants defender.
According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN’s NFL Nation, Collins is focused on cutting his weight and slimming down to 210 pounds from his current 218-to-220 status.
"Collins said Wednesday that he is currently 218-220 pounds. He wants to get down to around 210 pounds by the start of training camp.“If I keep my weight down, I can fly,” Collins said."
If Collins keeps his weight down, he can continue to develop into the ultimate nightmare for opposing offenses.
When Collins debuted in the NFL, his weight was in the 240-pound range—an issue that severely limited his mobility. In turn, he struggled in the way that NFL Draft analysts expected him to with a linebacker build in a safety’s frame.
Collins cut down to roughly 225 pounds for the 2016 season, however, and the results immediately improved.
One can only assume that Collins can move with even more speed and agility if he continues to responsibly cut weight.
Some might be concerned about how effective Collins will be against the run if he continues to shed weight. The success of the 2016 season implies that he’s being responsible with his weight loss, however, and thus inspires faith for 2017.
Fresh off of pulling down five interceptions and recording 4.0 sacks in 2016, Collins’ speed could make him even more effective.
