New York Giants: 3 reasons for, against Eli Manning’s return
By Henry Buggy
#2 – Manning’s Mentorship
The Giants can still make the offensive line a priority and select their future franchise quarterback in the 2018 draft. UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen is expected to be the most pro-ready quarterback in this year’s draft class, but truthfully, no prospect should be thrown into the starting lineup Week 1.
No matter if it’s Rosen or Darnold, the Giants next franchise quarterback would greatly benefit from learning behind Manning for at least a season. The preparation required to succeed in the NFL and the knowledge that Manning can provide to Big Blue’s next quarterback cannot be undervalued.
Aaron Rodgers, Steve Young, Philip Rivers, and even Manning benefited from having a successful veteran ahead of them on the depth chart. Manning took over for Hall of Famer Kurt Warner past the midway point of his rookie season, and who’s to say Darnold, Rosen, or someone else couldn’t do the same.
If New York’s next franchise quarterback is able to win two Super Bowls during their career, he will be viewed as a success. And if that’s the case, then who better to mentor him than Manning.
